OYAMA, JAPAN, APRIL 25, 2011 — Gigaphoton Inc. (Head office: Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. President and CEO: Yuji Watanabe) (website:http://www.gigaphoton.com/) today announces that Komatsu Ltd. (President and CEO: Kunio Noji), which currently owns 50% of all shares of Gigaphoton, has reached an agreement with Ushio Inc. (hereinafter “Ushio”) (President and CEO: Shiro Sugata) to purchase the remaining 50% shares from Ushio. As a result, the ongoing 50-50 joint-venture contract regarding Gigaphoton will be dissolved, and Gigaphoton will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Komatsu. The share transfer should be completed around the middle of May.
Gigaphoton was established by Ushio and Komatsu as a 50-50 joint-venture company to develop, manufacture, sell and service excimer laser light sources for lithography tools in August 2000. Since then, Gigaphoton has integrated Komatsu-owned excimer laser technologies and production facilities and Ushio’s global sales and service networks, and successfully expanded business, obtaining about a 50% share of the global marketplace today.
At present, Gigaphoton has an urgent need for the research and development of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light source for the next-generation lithography tools. To this end, Gigaphoton is working on the laser-produced plasma (LPP) method, while Ushio is working on the discharge-produced plasma (DPP). When these two methods are established for commercial applications in the near future, Gigaphoton and Ushio will be competing on the same market. In this light, the two parent companies have decided to dissolve the joint-venture contract to promote mutual growth in the same industry.
Gigaphoton is planning to further facilitate the commercialization of an EUV light source to expand its business.

ギガフォトンは、半導体リソグラフィ用光源としてのエキシマレーザの開発・製造・販売・サービスを行う会社として、2000年8月にコマツとウシオの対等出資で設立されました。以来、ウシオのグローバル販売・サービス体制とコマツが保有していたエキシマレーザに関する技術・生産体制を融合させることにより事業を発展させ、現在は世界シェアの約50％を獲得し、成果を上げてきました。
現在、次世代の最先端半導体露光装置用として、EUV（Extreme Ultraviolet：極端紫外）光源の研究開発が急務であり、ギガフォトンではLPP (Laser-Produced Plasma) 方式での製品開発を進めています。一方でウシオがこれと異なるDPP (Discharge-Produced Plasma)方式での製品化を行っていることから、今後この二つの発光方式が実用化に至った場合、両社が競合関係になる可能性がありましたが、これに対処し、お互いの発展を図るために今回合弁が解消されることとなりました。
今後、ギガフォトンは一段とEUVの製品開発を促進し、事業拡大を図る予定です。
